“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39
God of Mercy,
As we remember the tragedy that struck eleven years ago today, we can do nothing but fall back on your everlasting promises. As we remember the victims of this awful event, welcome them into you loving care. As we remember the families and friends of those victims, comfort them with your unending presence. And as we remember those people who would act with such violence and hate, overwhelm them with your love.
As we remember, knit us together as one body in Christ. Give us a brain filled with wisdom. Give us a heart filled with compassion. Give us eyes to see both the beauty of your creation and the injustice and sinfulness within. Give us ears to hear your people cry out, legs to run to their sides and arms to embrace them. Give us hands that are both strong and full of gentle grace. Help us to act as one, living out your love in the world.
You promise us that nothing in all of creation will separate us from your love and we know your promise will never fail us. Make that promise visible to us today, and fill our lives with your Spirit. We ask all this through the one who was, who is and who is to come, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
