Inspired by the Super Bowl advertisement featuring Paul Harvey and Dodge, we want to recognize the important contributions all farmers make. Especially women farmers. Rural Women produce more than half of all food grown in developing developed countries, yet own less than a third of all land.

Watch our tribute to the millions of women farmers below, or watch it on YouTube.

And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So God made a farmer. God said, “I need somebody to get up before dawn, fetch water, work all day in the field, fetch water again, cook supper, go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting at the cooperative.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody to stay up all night with a newborn baby, and feed it from her own breast and say, ‘You are mine.’ I need somebody who can shape a mortar handle from a baobab branch, husk enough millet to feed her family and sell at the market; who can take abaca fiber and make rope, tea bags or clothing tags; who planting time and harvest season will finish her 40-hour week by Tuesday noon and then paining from crouching back, put in another 72 hours.” So God made a farmer.

God said, “I need somebody to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean goats and tend the pink-comb pullets, who will stop her husker for an hour to tend to the tend to her children and a never-ending list of household duties.” So God made a farmer.

It had to be somebody determined enough to grind rock into soil to make arable land. Somebody capable of raising crops while raising a family. Somebody to seed, weed, breed, feed, haul water for miles and keep livestock close to home. Somebody who would smile then reply with a voice laced with hope when her daughter says she wants to spend her life doing what her mother does. So God made a farmer.
