Jun 1, 2012
Despite the strange cannibalistic stories that have popped up in news recently (see here and here), it appears a zombie apocalypse is not yet upon us. These awful stories illustrate the worst sides of humanity, but we hold on to hope for a world filled with justice, dignity and peace.
What else is happening around the world? Here are this week’s stories, excavated from page 7a:
- The Need for Aid: Death rates are quickly dropping in many poor countries due to aid-supported programs for healthcare.
- Photos from Around the World: The joy and heartbreak in a single day, from all around the globe.
- International Criminal Justice: Former Liberian President Charles Taylor is the first head of state to be convicted by an international court for war crimes since World War II.
- Accountability: Steven Powles argues that holding high ranking war criminals accountable for their misdeeds sends a message that we will not tolerate human suffering and injustice.
- Map of People Under Threat: How safe are indigenous people around the world? New data from the Minority Rights Group International illustrates violence in different countries.
- The Polio Problem: The original goal of global eradication set for 2005 has come and gone with a new goal of 2012. Despite the setbacks, with the help of aid, lowered poverty rates and governmental support, this goal seems entirely possible.
